The Story of the Autograph
Rich Karlis is a former placekicker in the NFL. He played from 1982 to 1990 with the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions.
Karlis was born and raised in Ohio. He played his college football at the University of Cincinnati. He wasn’t drafted and first tried to make it onto the Houston Oilers in 1981 but never made it out of camp. The next year he caught on with the Broncos. That’s probably the team in which he might be best known to play for (1982-1988).
As a Bronco he is probably best known for kicking the game-winning field goal in overtime that allowed the Broncos to beat the Cleveland Browns in the 1986 AFC Championship to reach the Super Bowl. But in 1989 he also tied a then-record while playing for the Vikings. He kicked seven field goals in one game against the Rams (it’s since been broken).
But I would be remiss if I didn’t also say that he was one of the last barefoot kickers in the NFL. I always thought that was nuts for several reasons as a kid, especially when I saw him play in the snow in that 1986 AFC Championship game.
The Score on Rich Karlis – 6.0
I wish I had cards of Rich in a Broncos uniform because that’s how I know him best. But I do like that his 1990 Score card, although he was no longer on the Vikings, shows him kicking with his bare foot. With regard to his signature, I think its interesting how “Rich” is scrunched together but his last name doesn’t seem to be.
Thanks Mr. Karlis! I’m giving this return a 6.
