The Story of the Autograph

Rich Bordi is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1980 to 1988 with the Oakland Athletics (twice), Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees (twice), and Baltimore Orioles.

Bordi is a native of San Francisco, California. He was first drafted out of high school by the Minnesota Twins in the fifth round of the 1977 MLB Draft. He didn’t sign and he instead ended up a Cal State Fresno. He was then drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the 1980 MLB Draft. He made his debut that same season on July 16, 1980. That was the only appearance he would make that year and to more the next year. The Athletics traded him to the Mariners for Dan Meyer. That was the first of four trades through 1985.

He got more regular action in 1984 with the Cubs when he appeared in 31 games and put up a 5-2 record with a 3.46 ERA. It was one of the better seasons of his career and then he was traded to the Yankees with Henry Cotto, Ron Hassey and Porfi Altimirano for Brian Dayett and Ray Fontenot. He had a really good season for the Yanks with a 6-8 record in 51 appearances and a career low 3.21 ERA. But he would be traded again with Rex Hudler to the Baltimore Orioles for Gary Roenicke and a player to be named later.

He’d continue to move around over the next few years but from here on out it was as a free agent and then getting released. He had a career high 52 appearances after moving to Baltimore but it was down hill from there.

Rich has a good signature and you can definitely recognize it as his. I think the only thing that hurt him on this return is that darn Yankees (should I say Damn Yankees?) dark practice jersey he had to sign over. The best one of these might be the 1987 Fleer card. It’s really bright and shows off the signature well.

Thanks Mr. Bordi! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
