The Story of the Autograph

Rich Becker is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1993 to 2000 with the Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, and Detroit Tigers.

Becker is a native of Illinois. He played football and baseball in high school and was being looked at by major college programs. But the Twins drafted him out of high school in the third round of the 1990 MLB Draft and he chose to sign with them. After three years in their minor league system he made his major league debut on September 10, 1993.

He bounced between the major league squad and the minors a bunch in the first few years. Bu tin 1996 he really got a good shot and put up some really good numbers. in 148 games he hit .291 with 12 homers, 71 RBI 31 doubles and 19 steals. He couldn’t keep that up the following year though and the Twins traded him to the Mets for Alex Ochoa in December of 1997.

Becker would bounce around after that and never really look like he did in 1996. He never hit more than 6 homers after 1997 and never hit better than .264, with most years being well below that. He would retire following the 2002 season.

These could have been a lot better but there’s a lot of smearing and rubbing that went on. I’m guessing that Rich put them in the envelope a little quickly after signing them. Then they just rubbed against each other as they bounced around in there. I think the best of them would have been the 1993 Bowman card but I like that Upper Deck Collector’s Choice card because of the picture.

Thanks Mr. Becker! I’m giving this return a 4.5 overall.
