The Story of the Autograph

Rene Lachemann is a former catcher and manager in the major leagues. He played between 1965 and 1968 for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics and later managed the Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Florida Marlins and Chicago Cubs.

Lachemann was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and is part of three baseball brothers along with Marcel, who played and work in a front office, and Bill, who managed in the majors. He was a batboy for the Dodgers while he was school and went on to attend the University of Southern California. He signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1964. He didn’t play too much in the majors and spent most of his time in the minors.

After managing in the Athletics and Mariners farm systems, he got his short at managing in the big leagues when he replaced Maury Wills in May of 1981 and kept the job until being replaced by Del Crandall midway through the 1983 season. He then moved on the the Brewers and didn’t even last a year as the club collapsed to finish last in the AL East.

He would continue coaching but got another shot as the manager of the newly minted Florida Marlins for the 1993 season. He was there until 1996, the year before they won the World Series. He had one more shot at managing the 2002 Chicago Cubs, but that was just for one game as the interim manager.

The Score on Rene Lachemann – 6.5

Rene has a sort of long and thin signature. I think the interesting thing about these cards is the Heritage card with the full team picture. I know some people get a lot of players to sign these cards, especially cards like this from the 70s’, but I don’t normally. And when do you see a card with a coach on it like this, not a manager?

Thanks Mr. Lachemann! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
