The Story of the Autograph

Phil Bourque is a former left winger in the NHL. His twelve-year career spanned from 1983 to 1996. During that time he played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, and Ottawa Senators.

Bourque was born and raised in Massachusetts. He played lower league hockey with the Kingston Canadians. He was never drafted but the Penguins signed him to a contract in October of 1982 and he played for their Baltimore affiliate, the Skipjacks. He made his debut during the 1983-’84 season.

He wouldn’t be a mainstay on the team until 1988. That year he played a career high 80 games and because of that opportunity, had his best year for points that season. He score 17 goas and a career high 26 assists for a career high 43 points. He would top 30 points the next two seasons including a career hgih 22 goals in the 1989-’90 season.

He was part of the Penguins back-to-back Stanley Cup winning squads in 1990-’91 and 1991-’92. He became a fan favorite when at the victory celebration for Cup number two he said, “What do you say we take this thing out on the river and party all summer!” These days he’s a broadcaster and is known by fans as the “Ol’ Two-Niner”.

After his time with the Penguins he played in New York and Ottawa but never got the same chances. Before the 1994-’95 lockout he almost died when he fell down a 40-foot cliff in Arizona. He broke three vertevrae in his neck, broke his skull, shattered his sinus cavity, broke his cheekbone and his nose.

I don’t know if Phil is someone who only signs one card or not. I think I have seen him sign more for others so I’m not sure if this is a new thing or just an oversight. From what I see on there his signature is pretty cool and I love that he includes his number because he has that great nickname with his number.

Thanks Mr. Bourque! I’m giving this return a 6.
