The Story of the Autograph

Pete Metzelaars is a former tight end in the National Football League. He played while he played for four teams, he is best known and spent the most time with the Buffalo Bills through their amazing run to four consecutive Super Bowls.

Metzelaars was born and raised in Michigan. He played his college football at Wabash College in Indiana. But he also played basketball and led the team to a Division III championship as a senior and won the Most Outstanding Player award for the tournament.

The Seahawks took him in the third round of the 1982 NFL Draft with the 75th overall pick. After three seasons in Seattle without more than 15 catches, Metzelaars was traded to Buffalo in 1985. This was a year before Jim Kelly got to Buffalo and after Kelly showed up his production would start to increase. His best season though were towards the end of his time in Buffalo. In 1993 he had career highs almost across the board with 68 catches, 609 yards and four touchdowns (the only number that wasn’t a career high.

But after the 1994 season the Bills didn’t resign him and he moved on to the Carolina Panthers where he caught the first touchdown in Panthers history. He moved on again after one year and went to Detroit for two years before his playing career ended. Since then he’s coach at all different levels including high school, college, NFL Europe and the NFL. Most recently he was the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Legends of the AAF.

The Score on Pete Metzelaars – 6.5

Pete has a chicken scratch style autograph. I say that when a signature is kind of jagged like his is. I think normally chicken scratch would be a bad thing with handwriting, but with signatures I only mean it to be a style because they don’t have to be legible. He signed with a nice marker, but the card is a bit dark to show it off. He certainly gets a good amount of ink on there though.

Thanks Mr. Metzelaars! I’m giving this one a 6.5.
