The Story of the Autograph
Paul Reuschel is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. His five-year career last from 1975 through 1979 and he played for the the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians.
Reuschel was born and raised in Illinois. He drafted a few times before signing: in 1965 by the Reds in the 26th round out of high school, in 1967 by the Senators in the third round out of Western Illinois, and in 1968 in the third round by the California Angels out of Western Illinois. It wasn’t until the secondary phase of the 1968 MLB Draft when he was drafted in the fourth round by the Cubs that he signed.
After several years in the minors he made his major league debut with the Cubs on July 25, 1975. While with the Cubs he and his brother, Rick, were teammates and are the only siblings to combine to pitch a shutout. He would move to the Indians in a mid-season trade in June of 1978 and was released by the Indians in October of 1979.
When you look at his career numbers he really was an average pitcher for the most part. He was 16-16 for his career with a 4.51 lifetime ERA. Aside from his last season with a 7.94 ERA he wasn’t too bad. He had nine lifetime starts and 188 lifetime strikeouts. I don’t think any particular year stands out and in some ways that is kind of how it is for relief pitchers. That said, when he was moved to Cleveland mid-season in 1978 he put up a 2.0 WAR for that half season.
The Score on Paul Reuschel – 7.0
This is one of those instances where I really wish I had more cards, or more of a variety of cards for a particular player. I sometimes don’t have that many cards and I send duplicates in the same request. I try to avoid duplicates in my requests, but I also see what guys will sign and there’s something in the back of my brain that makes me try to fill an envelope.
Thanks Mr. Reuschel! I’m giving this return a 7.
