The Story of the Autograph

O.J. McDuffie is a former wide receiver in the NFL. He played from 1993 to 2001 and spent his entire career with the Miami Dolphins.

McDuffie was born and raised in Ohio and played football, basketball, track and baseball in high school. He was a great all-around football player and earn Ohio Player of the Year honors in 1987 when he score 21 touchdowns that year. From there he went on to play for the Nittany Lions at Penn State. He set records there for receiving and all-purpose yards and won the Fiesta Bowl offensive MVP in 1992. He also played baseball while there in 1990 and still holds the school record for stolen bases in a single game with four. The Angels drafted him in the 41st round of the 1991 MLB Draft but he never signed.

The NFL was McDuffie’s calling and the Dolphins selected him in the first round of the 1993 NFL Draft with the 21st overall pick. He started as a reserve and returned punts to begin his career but soon worked some magic with the great Dan Marino. He ended up catching more balls from Marino than any receiver not named Clayton or Duper.

His best season has to be 1998 when he caught 90 passes for over 1,000 yards. He also scored seven touchdowns that year. After great years in 1995 through 1997, that had to be his peak. A toes injury would end up driving him to retirement.

I like O.J.’s big signature. He really fills up that cards pretty well. The cards of him in a Penn State uniform are my favorite because I don’t have many cards with guys in college uniforms and that makes things interesting. The best of the lot might be the 1993 Classic Four Sport.

Thanks Mr. McDuffie! I’m giving this a 6.5.
