The Story of the Autograph

Nick Leyva is a former manager in the major leagues. He played minor league baseball but never made it to the majors as a player. While he coach for several teams between 1984 and 2016, he only ever managed the Phillies from 1989 through 1991.

Leyva was born in Ontario, California and after going to the University of LaVerne he was selected by the Cardinals in the 24th round of the 1975 MLB Draft. He played the infield but after three seasons in the minors he never made it to the bigs and retired from playing. But in 1978 he took his first managerial job in Rookie ball and the moved through the Cardinals minor league coaching ranks.

He got his first shot at big league coaching in 1984 when he served as part of Whitey Herzog’s staff from 1984 through 1988. He was a base coach on their two championship teams in that time frame. In 1989 he got a shot at managing with the Phillies. His teams put up two losing seasons and then after losing nine of their first 13 games in 1991, that was it for his managerial career in the majors.

He continued to coach in the minors and majors after than. He not only coached in the states but also in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

The Score on Nick Leyva – 7.0

Nick has a pretty fancy signature. He uses the perfect marker for it on these cards too. The thinner marker helps show off the detail he has in his signature. I never knew him as a guy who only signs a certain number of cards. Unfortunately he signed these doubles for me and not the other different card I sent and he didn’t return that one. But those are the risks we take in the TTM game I guess.

Thanks Mr. Leyva! I’m giving this return a 7.
