The Story of the Autograph

Neil Walker is a second baseman in the major leagues and is currently a free agent. He’s been in the league since 2009 and played with the Pirates, Mets, Brewers, Yankees, and Marlins.

Walker was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area and is the son of former major league pitcher Tom Walker. In high school he played baseball (catcher), football (wide receiver), and basketball and was a two-time Male Athlete of the Year as named by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was a fan of his hometown team Pirates.

While he was recruited to play football and baseball he passed on those options. Instead the Pirates drafted Walker in the first round of the 2004 MLB Draft and as he made his way to the majors he was a Top 100 prospect and only behind Andrew McCutcheon and Brad Lincoln on the Pirates prospect charts. He made his major league debut as a September call-up on September 1, 2009.

He had some very successful years with the Pirates including three consecutive trips to the postseason from 2013 to 2015. Then he was traded to the Mets for the 2016 season. He’s continued to move around in trades and free agency and ended up with Miami this year. He played in 115 games and put up a .261 average with eight homers and 38 RBI.

I was really excited to get this one back. I had been trying for Neil’s signature a couple times and I finally broke through this time. I was glad to get him on a Mets card too. He always seemed like a good guy to me and from what I’ve seen and read that seems accurate (but I really have no idea – just a feeling).

Thanks Mr. Walker! I’m giving this one a 7.
