The Story of the Autograph

Mike Stanley played as a catcher and sometimes first baseman in the major leagues from 1986 through 2000. During that 15 year career he played for the Rangers, Yankees, Red Sox (twice), Blue Jays, and Athletics.

Stanley was born and raised in Florida and went to college at the University of Florida. While Stanley was there he helped the Gators to win the SEC regular season and tournament titles in 1982 and 1984. The Rangers drafted him in the 16th round of the 1985 MLB Draft.

While he played more and more while with the Rangers he only ever played more than 100 games once with them. After going to free agency he signed with the Yankees. There he got a lot more opportunity and had some pretty good years as a hitter. He hit .305 in 1993 and had 26 homers and 84 RBI. He earned the Silver Slugger Award and received some votes for MVP.  He continue to play well for the Yankees and in 1995 he earned his one and only trip to the All-Star game.

Some other notable things about Stanley: he caught the last of Nolan Ryan’s no hitters on May 1, 1991, he hit the first ever pinch grand slam for the Rangers on June 27, 1987, and he was one of the only players involved in a trade between the Yankees and Red Sox in the last quarter century.

He went into coaching after his career but quit to spend more time wit is family. Now he is an assistant coach for a prep school in Florida.

The Score on Mike Stanley – 6.0

Mike is a pretty reliable signer in my experience. These came out good, but the problem with these, like a lot of catcher cards is that the gear got in the way mostly. I don’t think it helps much that the gear is dark on the Yankee uniforms.  That 1988 Score card might be my favorite though.

Thanks Mr. Stanley! This one gets a 6.
