The Story of the Autograph

Mike Sadek is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played during 8 seasons from 1973 through 1981 all for the San Francisco Giants.

Sadek was born and raised in Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota. He was originally drafted by the Giants in the 12th round of the 1966 MLB Draft and didn’t sign. Then he was drafted by the Twins in the 1967 MLB Draft and signed with them. But the Giants like him enough that they came back in 1969 and got him from Minnesota via the 1969 Rule 5 Draft. He made his major league debut a few years later on April 13, 1973.

He only appeared in 39 games that first season and was back down to the minors for the entire 74 season. In 1975 he came back up and worked as a backup catcher and never appeared in more than 65 games in any season. In 383 games he batted .226 with five home runs and 74 RBI.

His nickname was “The Sheik” although I am not entirely sure why. Wikipedia suggests that it could be that his name is prevalent in the Middle East. In 1996 he played the body double for Robert DeNiro’s character during The Fan when the character was throwing a baseball.

The Score on Mike Sadek – 5.5

Mike has a pretty standard looking signature with a pretty cool loop on his “M”. It actually looks as thought he doesn’t even stop writing and his signature is just one word. The 1978 Topps card is pretty great and definitely my favorite of the much with how well it shows off the autograph.

Thanks Mr. Sadek! I’m giving this return a 5.5 overall.
