The Story of the Autograph
Mike Rochford is a former pitcher who appeared in the major leagues between 1988 and 1990 as well as in Japan in 1990. He spent his major league career with the Boston Red Sox and his time in Japan with the Yakult Swallows.
Rochford is a native of New England having been born in Massachusetts and growing up in Vermont. He played three sports in high school: baseball, in which he helped his team to a state championship; football, where he was a quarterback; and basketball, scoring over 1,000 points as a four-year starter and one of the best players in the state at the time. He went on to Santa Fe College in Florida where he was drafted by the Red Sox with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 1982 MLB Draft.
It took him a bit of time to reach the majors. After six years in the Red Sox system he made his major league debut on September 3, 1988. He appeared in two games to close out that season. Unfortunately that would represent 25% of his total appearances in the majors. He appeared six more time in the next two seasons and ended up with a 0-1 record and 9.58 ERA in eight appearances with one start and 10.1 total innings. While his ERA shows it, it’s still interesting to see that he let up more earned runs than innings and almost double the runs than he had innings as well. He actually had one less run given up than hits (17 runs on 18 hits).
The Score on Mike Rochford – 6.5
All of these cards are nice and bright and really gave Mike a pretty good place to sign. You can see his signature really clearly on all of them. The marker let him down a bit on these though. I have a feeling it wasn’t running low but maybe it’s a result of just signing fast (like most people do on a signature) and then the thin marker might lend itself to those “dryer” spots.
Thanks Mr. Rochford! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
