The Story of the Autograph

Mike Ramsey is a former infielder in the major leagues. He mostly played at second base and shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1978 to 1985.

Ramsey was born in Virginia but grew up in Georgia. He was first drafted by the Chicago Cubs out of high school in the 26th round of the 1972 MLB Draft. He instead chose to attend Appalachian State University where he was later drafted from by the Cardinals in the third round of the 1975 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with them on September 4, 1978. He only appeared in twelve games to close that season out and didn’t appear in the majors again with them until the 1980 season.

He spent the majority of his major league career with the Cardinals, through the 1984 season. That included being a member of the 1982 World Championship team.  In 1984 the Cardinals traded him to the Expos for Chris Speier and cash. He moved on to the Dodgers the following season and tried to make it with the Orioles after being released halfway through the 1985 season but never appeared for the Orioles and was only with them for about a month.

What I find interesting about this return from Mike is that he seems to sway through the cards with where he placed his signature. I don’t know which one he would have started with but you can see the 1983 Topps card has an angle and then the 1985 Topps card is more of a straight up and down orientation on the card. At first I thought he was trying to avoid his head or something but he signed over it twice.

Thanks Mr. Ramsey! I’m giving this return a 7.
