The Story of the Autograph

Mike Jeffcoat is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played mostly as a reliver from 1983 to 1994. He played in ten seasons over those years with the Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers and Florida Marlins.

Jeffcoat is a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He was first drafted in the 30th round of the 1977 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, but he didn’t sign. He went to college at Louisiana Tech and the Indians then drafted him in the 13th round of the 1980 MLB Draft. After a few years in their minor league system he made his major league debut on August 21, 1983.

After just a few outings in his first year he got a really good shot in 1984 with Cleveland. He made 63 appearances that year and put up a 5-2 record and 2.99 ERA. In 1985 he was traded to San Francisco with Luis Quinones for Johnnie LeMaster. He spent the 1986 season out of the majors and then came back to the Rangers and spent the majority of his career there.

After playing sparingly while trying to return to the major leagues in 1987 and 1988, he came back in 1989 purely as a starter. He made 22 starts and went 9-6 with a 3.58 ERA. He would continue as a starter in 1990 but only made 11 starts in twelve appearances and then fully went back to relieving the season after that. He moved on to the Marlins in 1994 and played his final game with them on June 24, 1994.

He was a college coach in more recent years but lost his job over a bit of a political issue in dealing with a recruit from Colorado. Then he started coaching for the Cleburne Railroaders and retired from there in 2021.

Mike puts a good bit of ink on your cards and these look really great. I don’t know if he really has a Marlin card to speak of so I’m glad these cover the rest of the teams that he played for. The black ink on the 1990 Donruss card looks really good and you can see that signature the best.

Thanks Mr. Jeffcoat! I’m giving this return a 7.5 overall.
