The Story of the Autograph

Michael Cofer is a former linebacker in the NFL. He played from 1983 to 1993 and spent his entire career with the Detroit Lions.

Cofer was born and raised in Knoxville, TN. He was a great high school player and was the top recruit in the state with offers from a ton of schools. But he didn’t go far for college at all. Cofer went to Tennessee, eventually captaining the 1982 squad. While he played for the Volunteers there was another Mike Cofer there who played tight end. To distinguish them they were nicknamed “Stop” (this Mike) and “Go.”

The Lions drafted Cofer in the third round of the 1983 NFL draft. He was starting in his second season and in 1985 he switched from defensive end to linebacker. His sack total increased and he would lead the team in that category from 1987 through 1990. In 1988 he made the Pro Bowl after collecting 12 sacks.

Toward the end of his career he would struggle with injuries and actually spent the entire 1993 season on IR and was eventually waived by the Lions.

The Score on Michael Cofer – 5.5

I really like Mike’s signature, but what you can’t tell from these is that there’s some smudging. It looks like the marker was good but probably was a little wet when going in the envelope. Plus some of these came out a little harder to read in person with the darkness of some of the cards. I hope I have some more cards of his because it’s a nice one that I’d like to try again.

Thanks Mr. Cofer! Even though I rated it a bit lower than what my interest in the signature is, it’s probably fitting that #55 gets a 5.5.
