The Story of the Autograph

Dave Gumpert is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played with the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, and Kansas City Royals from 1982 through 1987.

Gumpert was born in Michigan and went to college in Michigan at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids. To keep that Michigan theme/streak going, the Tigers signed him as an amateur free agent in November of 1980. He made his major league debut on July 25, 1982. He would end up making five appearances and two innings of work that first year and would end up with no record and a 27.00 ERA.

In fact never did get a whole lot of major league action. He pitched in 26 games in 1983 and 38 games in 1986 with the Cubs but other than that never appeared in more than 10 games in a season. His lifetime record is 3-2 with a 4.31 ERA in 135.2 total innings.

He worked as an athletic director for a high school and a coach. These days he lives in the same town he grew up in and still coaches.

Dave may not have a lot of major league experience, but he sure does have a great autograph. The 1987 Topps card is my favorite because it came out so clean on that card. He used a great marker and he does a great job filling it up. The “D” and the “G” look great. Dave is definitely a guy you wish had a lot more cards out there because of how good that looks.

Thanks Mr. Gumpert! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
