The Story of the Autograph

Max Venable is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played for 12 seasons from the years 1979 through 1991 (not appearing in the 1988 season) for the Giants, Expos, Reds and Angels. He then played in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines for two seasons.

Venable was born in Arizona but grew up in California where he starred in multiple sports in high school. If fact, he was probably best at football. But he turned down football scholarships and a multi-million dollar contract to play hockey for the Quebec Nordiques. He was first drafted by the Dodgers in the third round of the 1976 MLB Draft but later went on to the Giants through the 1978 Rule 5 Draft.

He played for the longest period of time with the Giants but never played more than 94 games with them. He also never hit higher than .268 (with a couple of .160-.180 ranges averages on his record). He was moved to the Expos and then the Reds and appeared in 108 games in Cincinnati but still only had 168 plate appearances. He only had more than 200 plate appearances three times in his career.

After his time in MLB he went on to Japan to play and later he coached in Korea (as well as with the Braves and Padres). These days he is a hitting instructor in the Seattle farm system. His son Will was also a major leaguer and his other son Winston played football in the NFL and CFL.

The Score on Max Venable – 5.5

Max has a pretty clean little signature. It’s almost one of those where you see his last name initial bigger than his first. I really like the way he makes the “x” in his name though. I actually tried to do it and it took my brain and hand a little bit to coordinate it and think through it though.

Thanks Mr. Venable! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
