The Story of the Autograph

Marv Foley is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1978 to 1984 with the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers.

Foley is a Kentucky native. He played baseball at the University of Kentucky for the Wildcats. He was then drafted by the White Sox in the 17th round of the 1975 MLB Draft. Three years later he made his major league debut on September 11, 1978. He played in just eleven games with 38 at bats in that first season. But he put up a .353 average.

His playing time increased over the next two seasons but he still split time in the minors. In 1981 he spent the entire year in the minors after struggling at the plate the year prior. He made it back up to the bigs but at that point he was behind both Carlton Fisk and Marc Hill on the depth chart. He went back down to the minors for all of the 1983 season again.

After the 1983 season he signed with the Rangers. He played the whole season, splitting time with Donnie Scott and Ned Yost behind the plate. He was released and signed with the Tigers but never made it back to the big leagues again and retired after the 1986 season.

He went into coaching in the minors with the White Sox, then later with the Cubs, Orioles and Rockies.

Marv has a pretty nice signature. I love the style he puts into his “F”. That doesn’t have to be a very interesting letter, but he makes it so. It almost looks as if it’s backwards. I think the best of these cards is the 1985 Topps card, but he’s more related with the White Sox so I wish that one came out a bit better. I think my favorite card in general though is that minor league card. I like the “manager face” he has on.

Thanks Mr. Foley! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
