The Story of the Autograph

Mark Carrier played wide receiver in the NFL for twelve seasons. He played with the Browns and Panthers after spending most of his career in Tampa Bay after he was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers out of Nicholls State.

Mark grew up in Louisiana and was a great athlete. He played basketball and track in addition to football. He was actually all-state in basketball and was 3rd in the state of Louisiana in the 800 meters after going undefeated for the season. In football he played receiver, defensive back and returned kicks. From there he went to Nicholls State where he would become an All-American in 1986. He finished there as the all-time receiving leader in receptions, yards, yards per catch and 100 yard games.

Mark was a pretty good receiver in the NFL, but only topped 1,000 yards twice in his career. One of those times was in the 1989 season with Tampa Bay where he caught 86 passes for 1422 yards and scored 9 touchdowns. That year he was recognized and played in the Pro Bowl for his only appearance of his career. But playing for the Buccaneers a lot of time back then didn’t mean you were on a successful team. He moved on to the Browns and appeared in the playoffs for the fist time in his career.

In 1995 he was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the NFL Expansion Draft. Carrier would score the first NFL touchdown in South Carolina for the Panthers in September of 1995 and a year later he score the first NFL touchdown in the Panthers home stadium in Charlotte. After playing for the Panthers for four years he is still highly ranked in the franchises receiving marks.

The Score on Mark Carrier – 6.5

Mark has a nice and big signature. In some he moves right from the end of the “k” to the beginning of the “C”, but the best version to me is when they are distinct. You can see that in the ’91 Pro Set Platinum card. The unfortunate part about that card is that it just a darker picture, unlike the others that are so bright. Those pumpkin and white uniforms really make it easy to sign over though. I think the one thing you have to be careful of with sending to Mark is that this is the receiver and not the DB. I’ve made that mistake with some other players before.

Thanks Mr. Carrier! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
