The Story of the Autograph

Mackey Sasser is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1987 to 1995 with the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates (twice), New York Mets, and Seattle Mariners.

Sasser was born in Georgia but grew up in Alabama. He went to Wallace Community College in Alabama and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the 1984 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut three years later on July 17, 1987. But he only played two games with the Giants before being traded to Pittsburgh for Don Robinson. He played another twelve games with the Pirates that season but they dealt him to the Mets before the 1988 season.

He spent the most significant portion of his career with the Mets (1988-1992). After backing up Gary Carter for two years, he received the best chance to play in New York including getting into a career high 100 games in 1990. That was definitely one of his best years as he put up a .307 average, six home runs and 41 RBI. But after a collision at the plate he began to have issues throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

He went back into a platoon/backup role and becan a free agent after the 1992 season. He signed with the Mariners but never really hit well and was demoted to the third string catcher. After being released the next year he tried to make it with a couple clubs and got in some games with the Pirates before retiring.

I have some older autographs from Mackey that look a lot different than each other. So when I got these they definitely compared to one of those versions of autograph. I guess that narrows down which one is his actual one. He has a pretty nice signature that’s got a good size. What I’ve noticed though is that Mackey’s cards are always pretty dark to show off his signature though. Plus some of these smudged a bit.

Thanks Mr. Sasser! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
