The Story of the Autograph

Len Matuszek is a former first baseman. He played from 1981 through 1987 with the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Matuszek was born and raised in Ohio. In high school he helped Moeller High School to a state baseball championship in 1972, their first in any sport in school history. He also played basketball and led the league in scoring as a senior. From there he went to the University of Toledo where he was drafted in the 5th round by the Phillies in the 1976 MLB Draft.

He made his major league debut on September 3, 1981 with the Phils and hit a pinch-hit double in his first at-bat. In his four years with the Phillies he only really got significant playing time in 1984 when he played in 101 games. That year he hit .248 with 12 homers and 43 RBI and was the season after the Phillies released Pete Rose.

The Phillies traded Matuszek to the Blue Jays right before the start of the 1985 season. But he didn’t stay in Toronto long. The Blue Jays traded him in July of 1985 to the Dodgers for Al Oliver. He finished his major league career with the Dodgers in 1987.

The Score on Len Matuszek – 6.5

Len has a pretty small signature but it’s not a bad one. He does something that guys like Tom Niedenfuer do, they sign on a sort of line. For instance if you look a the ’85 Topps card he sort of signs along the same plane as the team name and then the others he signs straight along with other lines on the card.

Thanks Mr. Matuszek! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
