The Story of the Autograph

Lee Elia was a shortstop in the major leagues in 1966 with the Chicago White Sox and in 1968 with the Chicago Cubs. He also managed and coached in the majors. He managed the Cubs and Phillie for a few years in the 80’s.

Elia managed in the minor leagues after his playing days and move around through the Phillies organization. He moved up to be their bench coach in the early 80’s and in 1982 was then hired by the Chicago Cubs. He managed the Cubs for two years to a 127-158 record and finished fifth in the division both years. He’s best known during those years for a beautiful tirade while making post-game remarks to reporters about the Cubs fans.

He was fired by the Cubs and went back to managing in the minors. In 1987 he went to Philadelphia to manage the Phillies for two years. He couldn’t top 60 wins in either year and had a 111-142 record overall.

The Score on Lee Elia – 5.5

Lee has an OK autograph but it’s a bit small. The 1983 Topps card is especially small but I see what he’s going for there. That card is really dark since he has that jacket on and he was looking for the best place to sign. Overall though he used a good marker and the actual signatures came out good.

Thanks Mr. Elia!  I’m giving these a 5.5.
