The Story of the Autograph

Kurt Stillwell is a former shortstop in the major leagues. He played from 1986 to 1996 with the Reds, Royals, Padres, Angels and Rangers.

Stillwell was born in Glendale, California and grew up in Thousand Oaks, California. The Reds made him the second overall pick of the MLB Draft in 1983, the same year he graduated high school. After just a few years in the minors, which doesn’t seem like a lot for coming out of high school, he made his major league debut on April 13, 1986.

The Reds game him some good playing time almost immediately and he spent two years in their lineup. After the 1987 season the Reds traded him along with Ted Power, to the Royals for Danny Jackson and Angel Salazar. He made an immediate impact and had two great years in Kansas City. The first year, 1988, he earned the one-and-only All-Star appearance of his career. In 1989 he did just about as well.

After 1989 his number tail off a bit. He was good enough to get some good playing time and ended up moving on to San Diego in 1992 as a free agent. He was released the next year mid-season and moved on to the Angels. At that point he pretty much bounced around for the rest of his time in the majors.

After retiring he became a fishing guide and later an advisor to the Scott Boras Corporation.

The Score on Kurt Stillwell – 5.5

BraveSTARR Score LogoBraveSTARR Score 5.5

Kurt has a pretty standard signature. It looks like he focuses on a first initial and then his full last name. It makes for a somewhat boxy signature. I do like that he centers it up pretty well. Of course that makes it to be right over the main action of the card which sometimes makes it hard to read. But I think the big issue with these is that the strength of the marker was a bit down.

Thanks Mr. Stillwell! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
