The Story of the Autograph

Ken Oberkfell played in the major leagues from 1977 through 1982. The first part of his career he spent in St. Louis and then after four years in Atlanta he had stints in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Houston and Anaheim. He spent the majority of his career playing third base but also played at second base.

Oberkfell signed with the Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1975 and made his debut on August 22, 1977. After a couple of seasons in which he he didn’t play many games in the season, he broke out in 1975 and played in 135 games. He was a light hitting infielder and never hit more than 5 homers in a season or drove in more than 50 RBI. He didn’t do too badly at the plate and had a lifetime average of .278.

1982 was a special year for Oberkfell and the Cards as they won the World Series that year and he played great in the World Series. He only hit .200 in the NLCS but then hit .292 in the series with a double, an RBI, scoring four time and had two stolen bases.

Moving to Atlanta via trade, Oberkfell became one of the “Bearded Braves” along with Glenn Hubbard and Bruce Sutter. From there he moved around a bit and would appear in another World Series with the Giants in 1989. After finishing his career as a player he moved into coaching.

Ken’s autograph isn’t super special from a style standpoint but it’s always really consistent. All of these came out really solid with is pretty much his think. I think my favorites are the Cardinals cards but especially that 1983 Fleer card. I love the expression on his face in that one.

Thanks Mr. Oberkfell! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
