The Story of the Autograph

Juan Marichal is a Hall of Fame former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1960 to 1975 with the San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Marichal is a native of the Dominican Republic. He was signed by the then New York Giants as an amateur free agent before the 1957 season. He would make his major league debut on July 9, 1960 against the Phillies and took a no hitter into the eighth inning that day. Within two years he would earn his first All-Star nod. That would start a string of nine straight All-Star selections through the 1960 season and he would add a tenth in the 1971 season.

He would end up winning 20 or more games six times and 18 or more games eight times in his career, with a career high 26 wins in the 1968 season and 25 in the 1963 season. In his career he would put up a 243-142 record with a 2.89 ERA. He would lead the league in complete games twice, once with 30 in the 1968 season and lead the league in shutouts with ten in the 1965 season. He would also lead the league in ERA with 2.10 in the 1969 season.

The Giants would only make the postseason twice during his time. In 1962 he would play in the World Series against the New York Yankees and lose. Then in 1971 they faces the Pirates in the NLCS and lost as well. He would play his final game on April 16, 1975 as a member of the Dodgers and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1983.

I really didn’t have any cards of Juan until I scoured my collection recently. I had to settle for a Topps Archive card unfortunately. I would really rather have had a card of his during his playing days. But I guess I only looked through my doubles and I could have take a cards from my main collection. As for his signature, it came out well on this card so that worked. He has a kind of standards signature but the best is the “HOF 83” inscription I think.

Thanks Mr. Marichal! I’m giving this return an 8.
