The Story of the Autograph

Juan Guzman is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 2000 with the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Guzman is a native of the Dominican Republic and was originally signed by the Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1985. The Dodger traded Guzman to the Blue Jays in 1987 and he spent a few more years in the minors before debuting on June 7, 1991.

His first three season he was great. As a rookie in 1991 be went 10-3 with a 2.99 ERA and finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting to Chuck Knoblauch. He was even better in year two with a full season under his belt. He put up a 16-5 record and 2.64 ERA en route to his one and only All-Star nod. That was an amazing year for the Blue Jays as they earned their first World Series rings by beating the Braves.

He’d continue to excel in 1993 with a 14-3 record and 3.99 ERA. That earned him Cy Young votes but probably more importantly the Blue Jays earned their second consecutive World Series title by beating the Phillies. Unfortunately from there things started to go down hill a bit.

He would only put up a few more winning records and his ERA ballooned into the 5-6 range. In 1998 he was traded to the Orioles, then the Reds the next year and finally had a shot with the Devil Rays in 2000. He only started one game for the Rays giving up seven eight runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings.

The Score on Juan Guzman – 5.5

Juan has a small and light signature. I would say it’s reminiscent of Phil Garner’s. It didn’t come out too bad on the 1993 cards but I think two of the cards are just two dark or too busy to really show it off well. I think my favorite of the bunch is the 1993 Upper Deck.

Thanks Mr. Guzman! I’m giving this return a 5.5 overall.
