The Story of the Autograph
John Grubb roamed outfields of major league ballparks from 1972 through 1987. He spent time with the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, and the Detroit Tigers. He was an All-Star in ’74 and was part of the World Champion Tigers in ’84.
Grubb was drafted by the Red Sox, Reds, and Braves and didn’t sign with any of them. Then the Padres came along in 1971 and he must of been looking for someplace with better beaches as they made him the 24th pick of the first round in 1971. He made his major league debut in September the following year.
He earned a starting role after putting up some good rookie numbers in 1973. The next year he would make the All-Star team. He was a pretty good hitter for is career with a .278 average. He would it over .300 for a season (with significant games played) in 1973 (.311), 1977 (.301), and 1986 (.333). He was never a home run guy with only four seasons with double-digit homers and topped out at 15 in 1978. That was the same year tat e had a career high with 67 RBI. He played 81 games in 1986 and ad 13 homers and 51 RBI to go along with his .333 average, but the next year was disappointing and the Tigers cut him.
The Score on Johnny Grubb – 7.0
John has a pretty solid autograph. It’s a standard signature style, but it’s really clean and he used a great marker. I was sure I had sent something to John before but then I looked back and I was wrong. So I was even more excited to get it once I knew it was something new for my collection. I think tat the only thing holding these back a bit are the cards. The ’87 Topps is especially dark with that jacket he has on.
Thanks Mr. Grubb! These get a 7.
