The Story of the Autograph

John Wehner is a former third baseman and outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 2001 for the Pittsburgh Pirates (twice) and Florida Marlins.

Wehner is a native of Pittsburgh. After high school he went to the University of Indiana and played baseball for the Hoosiers. The Pirates drafted the home town product in the seventh round of the 1988 MLB Draft. After a few years in the minors he made his debut for the Bucs on July 17, 1991.

He never played in more than 86 games in a season with that peak in 1996 to end his first stint with the Pirates. Normally you might not say that he was fortunate to be picked up by the Marlins after being selected of waivers by the Dodgers and then being released prior to the 1997 season. But 1997 was the year the Marlins won the World Series. He didn’t appear in the postseason outside one game in the NLDS, but it had to be a thrill.

He went back to the Pirates before closing out his career. After playing he’s worked as a coach and a broadcaster for the Pirates.

John has a great signature and these cards do a great job of showing it off. I especially like the 1992 Upper Deck card. His signature is an sort of mix of bubbles and waves. Probably more bubbles though. The “W” really seems to influence everything else in the signature.

Thanks Mr. Wehner! This return gets 7.5.
