The Story of the Autograph

John Verhoeven is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1976 to 1981 with the California Angels, Chicago White Sox, and Minnesota Twins.

Verhoeven was born and raised in California. He went to the University of La Verne where he was drafted by the California Angels in the twelfth round of the 1974 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for them two years later on July 6, 1976. He made it into 21 games that season and had a 0-2 record with a 2.38 ERA. He only played in three games the following season with the Angels and was traded mid-season to the White Sox with John Flannery and Don Kirkwood for Ken Brett. He would make it into six games with the White Sox.

He was back in the minors for the 1978 season and just before the 1979 season his contract was purchased by the Minnesota Twins. In 1980 he was back in the majors and would put in his most significant time in the majors with Minnesota. He played in 69 more games over the next two seasons with a 3-4 record and a 3.79 ERA. In 1982 his contract was purchased by the Red Sox but he never played in the majors again.

Since 1998 he’s been coaching in college. First he was the head coach of Biola University from 1998 to 2013 and he’s currently the assistant pitching coach at Azusa Pacific University.

The Score on John Verhoeven – 6.0

John has a nice signature. It’s a bit loopy and fun. Unfortunately though, these cards just don’t show it off very well. Most of the problem is that the images on the cards are so dark. That 1978 Topps card is really dark actually. That’s one of those killer uniforms that just doesn’t show anything off. But I guess a Pirates black jersey would be even worse.

Thanks Mr. Verhoeven! I’m giving this return a 6.
