The Story of the Autograph

John Paxson is a former guard and current executive in the NBA. He played from 1983 to 1994 with the San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls.

Paxson was born and raised in the Dayton area of Ohio. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother Jim in a lot of ways. He went to the University of Notre Dame after being named to the 1979 McDonald’s All-American Team with Isiah Thomas, James Worthy and Byron Scott. He earned two All-American nods while with the Fighting Irish and helped them to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1980 and 1981.

The San Antonio Spurs picked Paxson with the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 1983 NBA Draft. He played two seasons with the Spurs before moving on to the Bulls as a free agent. In Chicago he eventually became a valuable and clutch marksman from three-point range. He was part of the Bulls three straight championships between 1991 and 1993 and drained the winning shot in the 1993 NBA Finals.

He was a coach with the Bulls after his retirement but ultimately stopped to spend time with his family. He was then a broadcaster and eventually became the team’s General Manager. He’s since moved to the VP of Basketball Operations and now is a special advisor.

John seems like a pretty reliable signer from what I’ve seen and it’s great to have an NBA Champion and a guy who is known for a big moment in the NBA as part of my collection. What I find most interesting about this return is that the 1990 Skybox might be the best of them. Usually that isn’t the case because it’s basically a black card. But for these I think it came out the best. The others aren’t too shabby though.

Thanks Mr. Paxson! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
