The Story of the Autograph

John Felske is a former catcher and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1968 to 1973 for the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers. He managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1985 to 1987.

Felske is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He went to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He would sign with the Cubs in 1961 but he was stuck in the minor leagues for several years because Randy Hundley was a very reliable major league catcher. The Seattle Pilots drafted him in the expansion draft in December of 1969 and he stuck with the franchise as they moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers.

After his major league career he would go into coaching in the minors with the Brewers and then the Blue Jays. He moved up to the majors to coach with the Jays for 1980 and 1981. Then he joined the Philadelphia farm system and would coach in the majors in 1984. They would end up naming him as the manager as Paul Owens left the job. The Phillies were on the down swing though and while they improved in 1986 he would be out in the middle of 1987 as the front office changed.

There really isn’t much to John’s signature. It really only looks like “JF” with some line after each. But these cards really help the signature to look clear. I need to try to find a card from his as a player but I’m not quite sure if there are any.

Thanks Mr. Felske! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
