The Story of the Autograph
Joe Torre is a former player, manager and now executive with major league baseball. His playing days stretched from 1960 through 1977 and his managing career went from 1977 through 2010.
During his playing days Torre played for the Braves in both Atlanta and Milwaukee, the Cardinals and lastly the Mets. The Braves originally signed him as an amateur free agent in 1959 and he made it to the majors by late the next season. He earned enough time during the 1961 season to be a rookie and finished second to Billy Williams in the Rookie of the Year voting.
He had two significant All-Star stretches. The first was from 1963 through 1967 with the Braves and the second was from 1970 through 1973 with the Cardinals. But his best season was probably his MVP season of 1971 with the Cardinals. In 161 games he hit .363 with 230 hits, 137 RBI and 352 total bases. Those led all of the majors (and were career highs). In addition he hit 24 homers, 34 doubles and eight triples.
He started his managerial career as a player-manager with the Mets in 1977. He then moved to the Braves, Cardinals (after a break) and the Yankees. I think most reading this would know his work with the Yankees where he won four championships including three straight from 1998 through 2000. He finished out his managerial career in Los Angeles with the Dodgers in 2010. Since then he’s worked in the Commissioner’s Office.
The Score on Joe Torre – 6.0
This was one that was away long enough that I started to wonder if it was coming back. I know I started seeing others trickle in though and figured mine would be coming soon. Joe has a solid signature, but I wish I had a better card to get him to sign. I did pick up a Mets card of his so I’ll have to try him out again.
Thanks Mr. Torre! I’m giving this return a 6.
