The Story of the Autograph

Joe Slusarski is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played in seven seasons from 1991 to 2001 with the Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros (twice), and Atlanta Braves. He also played in Taiwan for the Sinon Bulls.

Slusarski was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He went to school first at Lincoln Land Community College and then at the University of New Orleans. It was while playing with New Orleans that he was first drafted by the Mariners in the sixth round of the 1987 MLB Draft and then later by the Oakland A’s in the second round of the 1988 MLB Draft. He ended up signing with the A’s. In 1988 he was also a member of the gold medal-winning Team USA in Seoul.

He made his major league debut on April 11, 1991. In his first year he started 19 of 20 games and went 5-7 with a 5.27 ERA. He came back a year later to start 14 of 15 games and went 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA. After than his shot at starting went away pretty much and he only pitched two games in 1993. He was back down in the minors and pretty much had the life of a reliever.

He bounced around in free agency and in several years never appeared in the majors. That included a stint in Taiwan. But with all the bouncing around, he was still part of some good teams including the 1992 AL West Champion A’s, the 1999 and 2001 NL Central Champion Astros, and the 2001 NL East Champion Braves.

He later worked as a pitching coach in the minor leagues.

The Score on Joe Slusarski – 5.5

Joe has a pretty standard loopy-style signature. I think you can kind of make out the “J” or that he is shooting for that. The “S” is a little easier to figure out and then there is a dot for the “i” at the end. But other than that it’s not a legible signature overall. Still he used a strong marker and it came out best on the 1992 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Slusarski! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
