The Story of the Autograph

Joe Lavender is a former cornerback in the NFL. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins from 1973 through 1982.

Lavender was born in Louisiana but raised in Southern California. He then went to San Diego State to play college football not too far from his home. The Eagles selected him with the 288th pick of the 1973 NFL Draft (12th round). After three season with the Eagles he was traded to Washington in 1976.

He had some great seasons as a Redskin. In 1976 he set a career high for interceptions with eight. Later on in 1979 and 1980 he put together back-to-back seasons of six interceptions and made the Pro Bowl both years. He closed out his career with the Redskins as a backup, but his last game was the Super Bowl. when the Redskins beat the Dolphins in January of 1983.

Joe has a pretty good signature. It’s almost a stacked style. It looks like the marker let him down a little bit though which is a shame. He has a pretty good sized signature and it was going to look great on this card. My favorite thing about this card (other than the 1982 design that I love) is Joe’s expression.
