The Story of the Autograph

Jerry Glanville was a head coach in the National Football League for nine seasons. He coached the Houston Oilers from 1985 to 1989 and then the Atlanta Falcons from 1990 to 1993.

Glanville attended Northern Michigan University and played middle linebacker. He’d move on to Western Kentucky to get a master’s degree and began his coaching career there in 1967 as a Defensive Coordinator. He coached on the defensive side of the ball at Georgia Tech and then moved on to do the same in the NFL. He spent time in Detroit, Atlanta, Buffalo, and Houston in various defensive coaching positions.

The Oilers made him their head coach first on an interim basis after firing another coach and then permanently. Glanville brought with him an aggressive stile of defense to go with his aggressive personality. He would create what was know as the “House of Pain” defense and take Houston from a middling team to a pretty darn good one.

He moved on to the Atlanta Falcons after being fired in Houston and would create the “Gritz Blitz” over there. He led them to the playoffs and his team seemed to adopt his personality and even seemed to design things around (like their “Back in Black” uniforms).

But Glanville is a quirky guy too. He supposedly left tickets for Elvis at games. He drove around James Dean replica cars. And probably most famously, he fueded with other coaches like Sam Wyche and Marty Schottenheimer.

So I can’t say for sure how much anyone puts thought and care into their autographs, but I like to think this is evidence of how Jerry does. He used different markers based on the different cards. The guy wore black A LOT so he has a silver marker when he signs over him wearing black and then he uses a black marker where it fits. I love seeing things like this from signers.

Thanks Mr. Glanville! This return gets a 6.5.
