The Story of the Autograph

Jeremy Roenick is a former center in the National Hockey League. His 20-season career spanned from 1988 to 2009 and during that time he played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes (twice), Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.

Roenick was born in Boston, Massachusetts but he moved around a lot because of his parent’s job. He started playing hockey at age four. But he would play hockey wherever his family travelled. Those travels sent him to the 1982 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament while in Connecticut and then a year later with a Washington Capitals youth team. He was drafted by the Blackhawks in 1988 with the eight overall pick. But before he played his first game in Chicago, Wayne Gretzky convinced him to play with his Junior Hockey team.

He was a great goal scorer with the Blackhawks. He scored 41 or more goals in four straight seasons from 1990-91 to 1993-94. His career high was in the 1991-92 season with 53 and added 50 assists for a 103 point season. He then had two seasons of 107 points the next two seasons, the second with a career high 61 assists.

The Blackhawks traded him to the Coyotes for a first round draft pick, Craig Mills and Alex Zhamnov. He continued some strong goal scoring season with at least 24 goals a season while he was in Phoenix. He would then move on to play for the Flyers as a free agent. He was a great veteran with them and won team awards in his first season there. He moved on to the Kings, Coyotes again, and then the Sharks before he called it a career.

He later would later work as a broadcaster. Unfortunately he was free from controversy, especially in recent years when he was fired for inappropriate comments about his coworkers.

This feels like a great return. When I think of Jeremy I think of NHL ’94 and playing that constantly. So I love having cards signed for him in a Blackhawks uniform. The black marker goes really well with these but I think my favorite is the action on the 1991 Bowman card.

Thanks Mr. Roenick! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
