The Story of the Autograph

Jayhawk Owens is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1993 to 1996 with the Colorado Rockies.

Owens was born and raised in the Cincinnati are of Ohio. He was first drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 25th round of the 1987 MLB Draft but didn’t sign. Instead he went on to play his college ball at Middle Tennessee State. He was then drafted in the second round of the 1990 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins.

He went through the minors with the Twins but didn’t end up appearing for them in the majors. Instead he was picked up by the Rockies in the 1992 Expansion Draft. He made his major league debut midway through 1993 on June 6, 1993. He never was able to stay for an entire season in the majors though with the most appearances he had being his last year in the majors, 1996, with 73 appearances.

He moved on to the Twins as a free agent and then to the Reds before retiring, but never got back to the majors. He went on to become a coach and manager in the minor leagues for the Reds.

His name comes from his Cherokee heritage, but he wasn’t always referred to by his full name. During college and his early professional days he went by just J. Owens on rosters until someone discovered his real name.

This was a nice surprise. I only send the Upper Deck card and Jayhawk included the other. I think both of these look really great and the marker came out clean. I had seen his name when going through some 1994 Topps Stadium Club and I didn’t know he signed. So it was great when I found him on SCF, but then I had to go dig for cards. I didn’t have a double of the Stadium Club though.

Thanks Mr. Owens! I’m giving this return a 7.
