The Story of the Autograph
Jay Schroeder played at Quarterback in the NFL with the Washington Redskins, Los Angeles Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals. Jay attended UCLA and only started in one game. He did have a great moment though. He passed to Freeman McNeil to beat USC, their arch rivals. He was then drafted in the third round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Redskins.
His career began as a backup to Joe Theismann in 1984 and 1985. Then in 1985 Theismann suffered a career-ending leg injury at the hands of Lawrence Taylor. Schroeder was the starter for the next few years and actually led the team to a 4-1 record for the rest of ’85. He continued that success in 1986 when he led the team to a 12-4 record. They would meet the Giants in the NFC Championship game and get shutout 17-0. That year Jay passed for a then team record 4,100+ yards that was only recently topped by Kirk Cousins.
1987 was a good year for Jay until a separated shoulder allowed Doug Williams to take over. And Doug did take over. He led the ‘Skins to a Super Bowl win over the Denver Broncos. Jay did try to come back and play, but the injury really never went away that year. After that Jay moved on to the Raiders. He would lead them to an AFC Championship game after the 1990 season but they would be beaten by the Buffalo Bills 51-3.
Jay was in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system, but was never really a great hitter. These days he coaches high school football in Utah.
The Score on Jay Schroeder – 6.0
Unfortunately I don’t have any cards of Jay on the Redskins. If I did they would have come out much better. The Pro Line card is not only a bad card to get signed because of the black, but it also got smudged too. The others are much better especially that ’93 Score card. I like Jay’s signature too so it’s too bad that these are just so full of black that it gets in the way. I really like the way Jay puts his number inside his “J”. Some better cards would help this score.
Thanks Mr. Schroeder! These get a 6.
