The Story of the Autograph

Jay Howell is a former major league pitcher. He played for the Reds, Cubs, Yankees, Athletics, Dodgers, Braves and Rangers from 1980 through 1994.

Howell was born in Florida but grew up in Colorado. He played his high school baseball there and then went to the University of Colorado. HE was drafted by the Reds in 1973 and didn’t sign and then again in 1976 in the 31st round of the draft and did sign. The Reds traded him to the Cubs, who would later trade him to the Yankees, who would later trad him to the Athletics, who would trade him to the Dodgers to cover the first part of his career. After that he moved a couple times as a free agent.

Howell is a three-time All-Star who aside from part of one year, was a reliever. He made two of those All-Star teams as an Athletic (’85 and ’87) and one as a Dodger (’89).  1985 and 1989 were his best years as he put up 28 and 29 saves and 1989 included a 1.58 ERA.

What I know Howell best for the 1988 NL Championship Series against the Mets when he was ejected for having pine tar in his glove. He and the Dodgers would go on to win that the NLCS and eventually the World Series against the team he was one the year before, the Athletics.

The Score on Jay Howell – 5.0

Jay has a small scribble of a signature. It’s so bunched up it’s kind of hard to see anything more than the “J” and maybe the “H”, if you squint. He used a good marker though. As always seeing that beautiful blue color on those Dodger cards is great.

Thanks Mr. Howell! I’m giving these a 5.
