The Story of the Autograph

Jason Varitek is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1997 through 2011 and spent his entire career with the Boston Red Sox.

Varitek was born in Michigan but grew up in Florida. As a kid he played in the 1984 Little League World Series (one of three players including Michael Conforto to do that). He was part of a state championship winning team in High School and went on to play for Georgia Tech. He helped them to the 1994 College World Series with future Res Sox teammates Nomar Garciaparra and Jay Payton. He went on to win the Golden Spikes Award that same year.

The Twin drafted him with the 21st overall pick in the 1993 MLB Draft and he opted to go back to college. The next season he was drafted by the Mariners with the 14th overall pick, but he didn’t play in the Mariner’s system right away. Instead he signed with an independent team and entered the Mariner’s system the next year. He would be traded in 1997 to the Red Sox in return for Heathcliff Slocumb.

He appeared in his first game in 1997 and in 1998 he split time with Scott Hatteberg and made it into 86 games. But by 1999 he was the starting catcher. Varitek would go on to be a three-time All-Star (2003, 2005, 2008). He also won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove award in 2005. His 2003 to 2005 years were probably his peak years. That coincided him helping the team to its first championship in 86 years in 2004 and then another championship in 2007.

While I’m not a Red Sox fan, and while he wasn’t the BEST player on the Red Sox while he was there, he always seemed like the heart and soul of the team from my perspective.

I was super stoked to get this back! I did not expect to get anything back from Jason. It was just one of those flyers you send out. I might try him again in the future with some even better cards to get signed. The Bowman Heritage is just a great card even though the signature is kind of overwhelmed by the business of all that catcher gear.

Thanks Mr. Varitek! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
