The Story of the Autograph
Jack “Black Jack” McDowell is a former pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1987 through 1999 most notably with the Chicago White Sox where he was a three-time All-Star and Cy Young Award winner. He also played for the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, and Anaheim Angels.
McDowell was born and raised in California. He attended Stanford after he was drafted by the Red Sox in 1984 but chose not to sign a contract. He was the Freshman of the Year in 1985 and All-American the next two years and help the Cardinal to the 1987 College World Series Championship. That looked good to the White Sox who drafted him in 1987 with the fifth overall pick of the MLB Draft.
He won the three of the first four games of his career and the only games he played in 1987 and put up a 1.87 ERA. When he got some more time the next year he went a bit backwards and put up a 5-10 record with a 3.97 ERA. After spending 1989 in the minors to deal with injuries he got back on track and became the Jack McDowell you know.
McDowell had an amazing run from 1990 through 1993 in Chicago:
- 1990: 14-9, 3.82 ERA, 165 Ks
- 1991: 17-10, 3.41 ERA, 15 CGs, 191 Ks, All-Star
- 1992: 20-10, 3.18 ERA, 13 CGs, 178 Ks, All-Star
- 1993: 22-10, 3.37 ERA, 10 CGs, 158 Ks, All-Star, Cy Young
He was traded to the Yankees in 1994 and put up a 15-10 record wit a 3.93 record. Unfortunately he flipped the bird to the Yankee crowd after he got shellacked by the White Sox and they booed him. He also gave up the walk-off, series-winning hit to Edgar Martinez in the 1995 ALDS. From there he moved on to the Indians and Angels but dealt with a lot of injuries.
McDowell is also known for playing guitar in the alt-rock band Stickfigure.
The Score on Jack McDowell – 5.0
I’ve always liked Jack’s autograph. I like it crazy triangular “J” and how he really fills up the card well. The problem with this return is that the marker he used is REALLY weak. But also the cards I gave him to sign don’t really help the issue much as they are either dark or busy. I’ll try him again in the future though.
Thanks Mr. McDowell! I’m giving this return a 5.
