The Story of the Autograph
Jack Howell played mostly at third base in the major leagues from 1985 through 1991 and then again from 1996 through 1999. He spent the majority of his career (nine years) with the Angels (from 1985 to 1991 and then again in 1996 and 1997). He also played with the Padres and Astros. From 1992 through 1995 he played in Japan.
Howell was born and raised in Arizona. After high school he started at Pima Community College and then moved up to the University of Arizona to play baseball for the Wildcats. The Angels signed him as a free agent in 1983 and after a little more than a season in the minors, he made his major league debut on May 20, 1985.
He became more of a regular player in the 1987 season and appeared in 138 games. That might have been his best season in the majors. He hit .245 that year (but he was never a great hitter for average) and had 23 homers and 64 RBI, both of those career highs. The next two seasons were also very good for Howell. In 1991, the Angles traded him to the Padres.
The next season he headed to Japan and played for the Yakult Swallows until 1994 and then the Yomiuri Giants in 1995. In that first season he won the Central League MVP while leading the league in homers and average. He returned to the majors in 1996 and played a couple more years as a bench player.
The Score on Jack Howell – 5.0
Jack has a pretty simple and small autograph. All of these came out well, with maybe the 1987 card coming out best, but the size really impacts my score here. Even if the style of the autograph stays the same, filling up that card and really making the auto pop goes a long way. Still, these aren’t smudged or anything like that and this was a good marker.
Thanks Mr. Howell, I’m giving these a 5.
