The Story of the Autograph

Hersey Hawkins is a former guard in the NBA. He played from 1988 through 2001 with the Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets (twice), Seattle Supersonics, and Chicago Bulls.

Hawkins was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He went to college at Bradley University and started all 125 games the Braves played while he was there. When he graduated in 1988 he was the fourth-leading scorer in Division I history but has since dropped down the list to tenth. In the 1987-88 season he average 36.3 points per game. He was also a member of the last group of college players to go to an Olympic games when they won bronze in Seoul in 1988.

The Los Angeles Clippers made Hawkins the sixth overall pick of the 1988 NBA Draft. He was immediately traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for the rights to Olympic teammate Charles Smith. With the 76ers earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors while playing alongside Charles Barkley. He appeared in his one-and-only All-Star game as a Sixer in 1991.

In 1993 he moved on to the Charlotte Hornets via trade. He would play there two years before being traded to the Seattle Supersonics. After four years in Seattle it was yet another trade that moved him to Chicago. After one injury-filled season there he moved on to play in Charlotte for his final season before retirement.

It looks like Hersey only signs his last name. I think you can definitely see the “H” and then it appears to just go in to the “k” and a couple lines for the “ins”. The NBA Hoops card is thankfully bright enough to show off the signature a bit while the Topps cards is just so dark.

Thanks Mr. Hawkins! I’m giving this return a 6.
