The Story of the Autograph

Haywood Jeffires is a former wide receiver in the NFL. He played for the Houston Oilers from 1987 to 1995 and the New Orleans Saints in 1996.

Jeffires is a native of North Carolina. He stayed in the state to play football… at State, playing for the North Carolina State Wolfpack from 1983 to 1986. His 100+ receptions, 1,700+ yards and 14 touchdowns during his college career showed enough promise for him to be drafted. The Houston Oilers selected him in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft.

Most of Jeffires career was within the “Run & Shoot” era of the Oilers with Warren Moon as his quarterback. While that would allow him to put up some great stats, he shared his time in that offense with some other great receivers too: Earnest Givins, Drew Hill, Webster Slaughter, and Curtis Duncan. His best season was 1991 when he caught 100 passes for 1,181 yards and seven touchdowns. That would earn him a First-Team All-Pro selection and start the first of a string of three Pro Bowl appearances.

While his names is spelled “Jeffires” you say it “Jeffries”. In 1991 Tecmo Super Bowl actually spelled his named as it sounds not as it spelled.

If you read my blog regularly you know that I like finding interesting letters in the way people sign. Well, Haywood has one. His “J” is definitely interesting. Its really hard to figure out if he is writing it more in a script or cursive style. But then the curve at the bottom seems to be going the wrong way. It almost looks like he’s trying to do a cursive “Z”.

Thanks Mr. Jeffires! I’m giving this return a 6.
