The Story of the Autograph

Gordie Roberts is a former defenseman in the NHL. He played from 1979 to 1994 with the Hartford Whalers, Minnesota North Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Boston Bruins.

Roberts was born in Detroit, Michigan and was named after Red Wings star Gordie Howe (who he would eventually be teammates with). He played junior hockey in Ontario with the Detroit Junior Red Wings. The Canadiens drafted him in the third round of the 1977 NHL Draft with the 54th overall pick. At that time he was playing in the WHA for the New England Whalers. He made his debut with Hartford in the 1979-’80 season.

The Whalers traded him to the North Stars and he would end up spending eight seasons in Minnesota, the longest stint with any team in his career. He had some of his best season there. From 1980-’81 through 1985-’86 he would have at least 23 points per season. That included his career highs of eight goals 45 assists and 53 points in the 1983-’84 season.

After his time in Minnesota he moved around a bit. But that moving around included a stop in Pittsburgh for two seasons. It was a good time to be a Penguin as he was part of back-to-back Stanley Cup winning squads in the 1990-’91 and 1991-’92 seasons.

After his playing days ended in the NHL, he coach in the IHL (he was actually playing and coaching) and later coached in the NHL with the Phoenix Coyotes. He then scouted for the Canadiens and coached in high school

Hockey cards can be tough to sign. They have some of the busiest images and they tend to have a lot of dark colored uniforms. You would think with the white ice and the white boards there might be someplace good to sign, but not usually. Gordie did a great job with this. The blue on blue cuts through pretty well on these with my favorite being the 1990 Pro Set card.

Thanks Mr. Roberts! I’m giving this return a 7.
