The Story of the Autograph
George Seifert is a former college and professional football coach. He coached for colleges from 1964 through 1979 and then in the NFL from 1980 through 2001.
Seifert was born and raised in San Francisco and worked as an usher for the 49ers when he was a high schooler. He played college football at Utah as both a guard and a linebacker. After college he immediately went into coaching. His biggest coaching job in the NCAA ranks was either as a head coach at Cornell or as a defensive backs coach at Stanford which he did in two separate stints.
He moved on to the NFL as a defensive backs coach with the 49ers in 1980 as was promoted to the defensive coordinator role in 1983. His defenses would finish in the top ten in fewest points allowed in ever season and the last two defenses he led finished in the top five for fewest yards allowed. When Bill Walsh retired after the 49ers victory in Super Bowl XXIII he was promoted to the head coaching role and led the 49ers to a second consecutive Super Bowl win in his rookie coaching season. He would win a second Super Bowl after the 1994 season.
Even though he had a great record, the 49ers didn’t offer him an extension and his time there ended in 1996. He then went on to the Carolina Panthers from 1999 to 2001. He was fired after the 2001 season.
The Score on George Seifert – 7.5
George has a really great stacked signature. He fills up the card pretty well. I think my knock on this one is really just that the marker wasn’t the strongest. There’s just a couple spots in the signature that show some gaps. I realized how different head coach cards are from baseball manager cards. There really aren’t a lot of them out there.
Thanks Mr. Seifert! I’m giving this one a 7.5.
