The Story of the Autograph
Gene Larkin is a former former major leaguer who played his entire career with the Minnesota Twins from 1987 through 1993. He was a switch-hitter who played at first base, the outfield, and DH.
Larkin is a New Yorker and went to Columbia University. He was drafted in 1984 in the 20th round and was the first person from Columbia to make the majors since Lou Gehrig. After a few years in the minors he made his debut in May of 1987. He made appearances in over half the Twins games that year as they made their way to a World Series win against the Cardinals. He would still be part of the team a few years later when the Twins won their second World Series title, this time against the Braves. Larkin definitely was part of the golden years for the Twins.
He had a career .266 batting average and in looking at his yearly numbers, that was super consistent. He had a high year of .286 and a low year of .246. Ever other year his batting average was between .264 and .269. I guess he was what he was at the plate pretty much. But his best moment was probably driving in the series-winning single in 1991 to score the winning run in the 10th inning of Game 7.
These days Larkin lives in Minnesota and coaches youth travel baseball and provides baseball instruction
The Score on Gene Larkin – 5.5
I would refer to Gene’s signature as really open. He doesn’t have a really long name but he makes it take up some space by making each letter almost having the same amount of space. It’s almost like he’s scripting in a “Courier” type of font where every letter takes up the same width. A couple of these are really not great for a signature. The ’93 Upper Deck might be my favorite though.
Thanks Mr. Larkin! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
