The Story of the Autograph

Gene Clines is a former major league outfielder. He played from 1970 through 1979 with the Pirates, Mets, Rangers and Cubs.

Clines was born and raised in California. He was drafted by the Pirates out of high school in the 6th round of the 1966 MLB Draft. He debuted with them on June 28, 1970. In 31 games he mostly was a reserve with on 39 plate appearances but he hit .405 with the chances they game him. The next year he played 97 games on the 1971 World Series title winning Pirate team.

He never played more than 116 games in any season with most years hovering just over 100 games. His strengths were being quick and playing defense. Given he only had five homers in his career you can tell that power wasn’t his strong suit but he did have a lifetime .277 average which isn’t too shabby given a mostly reserve role.

After his playing days he stayed around as a coach in the minors and majors.

The Score on Gene Clines – 5.5

Gene has a pretty simple signature. I think it looks more simple with the thin marker he used. With a bigger marker he would probably sign a little bigger, but at this size that thin marker shows as much detail as he can show in his autograph. My favorite of these is the 1978 Topps card. I should try to find some Pirates cards of his.

Thanks Mr. Clines! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
