The Story of the Autograph

Adam Kennedy is a former second baseman in Major League Baseball. He had a fourteen-year career that spanned from 1999 to 2012. During that time he played for the St. Louis Cardinals (twice), Anaheim/Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kennedy was born and raised in Riverside, California. He went to Cal State Northridge and was a standout player during college. He set records for hits, RBI and batting average while playing shortstop. The Cardinals drafted him with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 1997 MLB Draft. He played well in the minors and debuted just two years later on August 21, 1999.

Prior to the 2000 season Kennedy was traded to the Angels where he is probably best known for playing. In his seven years there he was their regular second baseman. He would set career highs in homers (13), RBI (72 in his rookie season), stolen bases (22 in two different seasons), and average (.312 in 2002). In 2002 he was part of the squad that won the World Series again the San Francisco Giants. During that series he had seven hits, two of which were doubles. He also had two RBI and a .280 average.

He returned to St. Louis as a free agent for a few years and then he bounced around a bit starting in 2009. He signed a minor league deal with the Rays but they traded him to the Athletics before he played a game for them. The he bounced around further until ended his career with the Dodgers in 2012.

Adam has a pretty crazy signature. One of these cards (the 2009 Topps card) had me fooled into thinking he might put his number as part of his signature but it’s just the way he ends it. You can see that the other cards kind of hide that part of his signature.

Thanks Mr. Kennedy! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
